The silver is marked 925, you can read than 825? Although there is also a new model silver 800 mark. If the ring is silver as silver does not rust in water can be used.
If you are not placed your green fingers is a good sign! Although this is perhaps one of silverplate subject for some time until the coating wears out money to a cheaper alloy underneath.
I can not really say what are the stones, or whether real or artificial, without seeing, but Onyx is a good assumption that lower-quality sapphires appear black and opaque. Both are used for smaller stones, and often exceeding 9 ct are silver or gold.
If you are sure the diamonds are real, then it is likely that a sapphire was dark, it would be useless for most developers and manufacturers to use diamond as part of an artificial stone.
Only one real way to know is the ring with a jewelry loupe, at least 10 times) the force (like a magnifying glass if the stones have inclusions are real - inside of defects which can be seen so. If the stones clean and clear as can be seen almost 100% of humanity - is a clarity in nature only rarely.
A jeweler will probably say exactly in a position to look to how to deal with the stones and metals for a while, it becomes obvious by a quick glance at the color, brightness, etc., which may not be real.
But I would also say it is a gift from his new girlfriend and enjoy it as such - as you say, a ring is beautiful and you will love :-)
Sometimes, unscrupulous dealers sell gray chalcedony or agate is dyed black or green to imitate onyx. Calcite is also sold as onyx, but demanding it is fairly easy, because Onyx is very difficult, but something soft, like a fingernail can scratch calcite. In addition, part of the marble is called Onyx, but it is much softer than Onyx and be subject to damage by acids.
